High Risk Meds Endocrine Flashcards
BISPHOSPHONATES- examples??
Alendronate and risedronate
Bisphosphonates Mechanism of action
These are absorbed onto bone crystals and slow down the rate of bone turnover.
Osteonecrosis of the jaw
Patients taking intravenous bisphosphonates are at much higher risk. Patients should have a dental check- up before therapy, routine dental check-ups, keep good oral hygiene and report any oral symptoms such as tooth mobility, discomfort, or swelling, non-healing sores, or discharge to a doctor and dentist throughout therapy.
Atypical femoral fractures
Rare possibility, mostly in individuals undergoing long- term therapy. Patients should be informed to report any thigh, hip, or groin pain they have while taking bisphosphonate.
Osteonecrosis of the external auditory canal
The incidence of benign idiopathic osteonecrosis of the external auditory is extremely low, occurring mostly in individuals receiving long-term medication. During bisphosphonate therapy, patients should be advised to report any ear discomfort, discharge, or infection.
