high energy coastal environment- Saltburn to Flamborough head Flashcards

1
Q

what is the geology of Flamborough coastline

A

-adjacent north York Moors rise up to 400m above sea level- mainly sandstone, shales and limestone.
-Flamborough head is a chalk headland- topped with till- glacial deposit
-the high cliffs, headlands and bays ( varied coastline) due to different rock resistance.

Q

what is the wave energy like at Flamborough?

A

Saltburn is north facing so receives the highest inputs of wave energy.
rates of erosion differ due to wave energy also type of rock -clay 0.8m per year
-sandstone & limestone 0.1m
High energy also responsible for longshore drift, where headlands interrupt this, beaches are formed- Filey bay.

Q

what are the main sediment sources and cells for the Flamborough coastline

A

coastline is sub-cell 1D of sediment cell 1 which extends from south Scotland to Flamborough.
sediment can be supplied through cliff erosion

Q

what are the shore platforms like along the Flamborough coastline.

A

High wave energy and active erosion means cliffs retreat and leave behind rocky shore platforms

Q

what are the landforms like on headlands along the Flamborough coastline.

A

Wave energy is concentrated on resistant headlands- weaknesses like joints are exploited enlarging them to form caves and arches.
GREEN STACKS- example of stack after the roof of arch collapsed.
50 geos developed - where they meet faults blowholes have developed.
