The pope is the
Head of the church
Cardinal are
Appointed by the pope.They elect his successor.
Bishops are
Successors of the apostles.Responsible for a diocese ( large area of churches )
Priest are
Responsible for a small area of the church called a parish.Administer the sacraments and presch the word of God
Deacons
Assist the priests and preach the word of God too.
What was the main aim of the Second Vatican Council
To work out how to make the Church more open and accessible and more revelant to the modern day.
The Council produced
4 major documents
Dei Verbum ( Word of God)
Deals with the interpretation of the bible.
Stresses that the bible should be taken seriously as the Word of God, but should not be read in a literal way.
Lumen Gentium ( on the church)
Deals with the nature and structure of the Church.
Stresses that all members of the Church have an important roles to play, not just the pope.
Emphasises the idea of a pilgrim Church moving forward within a modern society
Sacrosanctum Concilium ( on the sacred liturgy)
Deals with the liturgy and church services.
Emphasises that all people should be able to take a full part in the worship of God.
Allows Catholics to hear the mass in their own language.
Gaudium et Spea( the church in the modern world )
Deals with issues related to modern society.
Stresses that the Church should not be separate from the modern world, but should guide people how to live in the modern world .
Lay people are
Non ordained members of the church.They share in the priestley office of Christ through their baptism
