Rhyme- the rhyme is harmonious- lack of rhyme signals the turning point in the poem as the boy realises his relationship with the other boys is not harmonious, they are cruel
The dark damp smell of sand moves in your throat
Sensory imagery, helps the reader empathise with the bit, put themselves in his situation
The darkening garden watches.
The bushes hood their breath;
Personification + caesuras, creates an ominous suspenseful atmosphere, slows the pace- reader is waiting for boys realisation
But where are they who sought you?
Rhetorical question- boys initial confusion follows by the sudden realisation that the other boys have abandoned him
The sun is gone.
Symbolises boys loss of hope that he’s won the games/ realisation of his so-called friend’s cruelty
