Small producers faced tough competition from cheap machine-made
goods from industrialized England
especially in textiles.
Challenges for Peasants and Workers:

peasants suffered under
feudal dues.
Rising food prices and bad harvests caused poverty in both cities and
rural areas.

n 1848
food shortages and unemployment led to protests in Paris.
• Barricades were built
and King Louis Philippe was forced to flee.
A Republic was declared
granting voting rights to all men above 21 and
guaranteeing the right to work.
National workshops were set up to provide jobs.
