Heysham and Morecambe Bay Flashcards
How long is the stretch of coastline ?
8.5 km
What are the 2 defence types at Heysham and Morecambe ?
Mix of hard engineering and contemporary methods
What does the rock armour/rip rap strategy include ?
436,000 tonnes limestone rock armour 1km east of the town protecting sea walls.
What does the breakwater - rock groynes strategy include ?
10 breakwaters and rock groynes built in front of the town which included a number of fish-tail groynes and over a million tonnes of locally sourced limestone was used.
What did the repaired and replaced sea walls strategy include ?

What did the concrete revetment and sea wall strategy include ?
To the west of Heysham Head the existing sea wall and large concrete revetments were repaired and left in place to protect the nuclear power station behind.
How did they aim to support sustainable development whilst building ?
Sourcing local limestone
How did they use soft engineering strategies ?
89,0000 tonnes of sand were used for beach nourishment at the eastern end of the promenade.
