Coastal management Flashcards
What are 5 hard engineering strategies ?
Sea walls, Rock Armour, Gabions Revetments, Groynes
What are 5 soft engineering strategies ?
Beach nourishment, Dune regeneration, Managed retreat, Land-use management, Do nothing
What are Shoreline Management Plans ?
A system which splits up the UK coastline into sediment cells and sub-cells and are designed to identify the most sustainable approach to managing flood and coastal erosion risks.
What are the 3 different scales SMPs are divided into ?
Short term ( 0 - 20 years ), Medium term ( 20 - 50 years), Long term ( 50 - 100 years )
What the 4 coastal management options ?
Do nothing, Hold the line, Managed retreat, Advance the line
What is Integrated Coastal Zone Management ?
Process that brings together various stakeholders and disciplines to manage coastal resources sustainably. Aims to balance environmental, economic, and social objectives in coastal areas, which are often vulnerable to a range of pressures, including development, pollution, and climate change.
What policies do ICZMs aim to co-ordinate ?
Policies that affect the coastal zone such as ; fishing, agriculture, offshore wind energy, nature conservation
What is the cycle ICZMs should operate in ?
Planning - Decision making - managing and monitoring implementation - Information collection
What is soft engineering ?
Uses natural systems for coastal defence, it involves manipulating and maintaining these systems without changing their fundamental structures.
What is hard engineering ?
Making physical change to the coastal landscape using resistant materials.
