Direct Primary
- Directly selects party’s candidates for each office.

Nominations by Caucus
informal meetings in which party in government agree on who to nominate for office from their political party.
Nomination by Convention
select the party’s nominee for office and adopt the party platform.
Closed Primary
- Voters register as major party members prior to election according to their party.
- Some can change status and are hybrids/semi-open.
Open Primary
Voters receive ballots for all parties and then select party of their choice.
Top Two/Nonpartisan primary
All candidates appear on same ballot, but only top two vote getters for each office advance to general election.
Runoff Elections
When a percentage/absolute majority is required to win the election, and if not achieved, the top two will have this election to determine winner.
Crossing Over
When another parties members in a open primary vote in the other party due to exciting race or candidate.
Raiding
Effort to weaken the other party by voting for its least attractive candidates in an open primary.
Parties Dislike Primaries
- They don’t always pick party favorites.

Where two primary candidates of the same party become heated and divide the party’s voters.
