A

Prodromal phase with abnormal skin sensations and pain in the affected dermatome. May also have headache, photophobia, malaise and fever
A rash then appears 2-3 days later in the dermatomal distribution
This is maculopapular initially which then becomes vesicular
The rash can be painful, itchy, tickly and does not cross the midline
The lesions usually crust over within 7-10 days

when do you give treatmnet

A

Give oral aciclovir if …. severe, immunocompromised or non-truncal involvement, ideally within 72 hours!

complciations

A

Post-herpetic neuralgia (acyclovir helps)
Skin scarring
Herpes zoster oticus (Ramsay Hunt syndrome) = when the virus infects the facial nerve, causing lesions in the ear, facial paralysis, hearing and vestibular symptoms
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus - when the virus infects the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. Look for Hutchinson’s sign (a rash on the tip of the nose) and visual symptoms. Can lead to blindness

A

when the virus infects the facial nerve, causing lesions in the ear, facial paralysis, hearing and vestibular symptoms
