Ordinary world
The hero is shown against a background of environment, heredity, and personal history.
Whiplash: Andrew and dad sit in the cinema and discuss life/ career. Dad: get some perspective
Hero: I don’t want perspective
Jurassic Park: the two paleontologists do their job and that’s it. They just found a
new skeleton and are working on that.
Call to adventure
First given notice that everything is going to change, inciting incident that gets the story going.
Wisplash: Drums with me – no not you, other drums. Be there 6 AM sharp.
Jurassic Park: Mr Hammond storms into their house and tell them to celebrate and
they are invited to his new theme park in Costa rica.
Refusal to call
The hero is relucant to answer the call to adventure. Should be clear that adventure is dangerous.
Wisplash: No clear refusal, he really wants to be in the band.
Jurassic Park: at first the two don’t wanna go, but Mr Hammond offers them to pay
for their dig.
The mentor
Guide and magical helper.
Wisplash: Fletcher tells andrew a story about how charlie parker became charlie Parker.
Jurassic Park: it might be Alan for the kids, definitely not Mr Hammond. It could also be Dr Malcolm, who supports them from the beginning.
Crossing the first threshold
Person actually crosses into the field of advanture, venturig into an unknown.
Wisplash: Start of the first class – second tick away.. 9 AM sharp the advanture begins not a change in location, but different atmosphere afterwards.
Jurassic Park: they actually go to the park and begin the tour.
Tests, allies & enemies
The hero is tested. These tests train the hero.
Wisplash: Practice till fingers bleed, first performance, trial with other two drummers.
Jurassic Park: Dennis Nedry (a tech) wants to steal embryos, so he stops the system
and fucks up the fences, thus all dinos are free to go where they want.
The approach to the inmost cave
The hero comes at last most dangerous place in the special world.
Wisplash: Must get to the competition in time
Jurassic Park: the cars obviously stop at the T-rex home and don’t move anymore
The ordeal
The protagonis faces the greatest challenge yet. He faces death.
this is often the amotional low point of the movie.
Wisplash: He fights Fletcher on stage and is expelled from Shafer.
Jurassic Park: the T-rex eats the lawyer and almost kills everyone else -fun!!
Reward
Seizing the sword, Facing death has life-changing consequences. This reward is often knowledge, insight, a new ventage point.
Wisplash: flatcher: ‘I need a new drummer for the band.’
Jurassic Park: Alan and the kids make it back to the common room, but there’s
raptors still.
The road back
The hero is driven one last time to complete the advanture.
Wisplash: Andrew starts playing his drums again.
Jurassic Park: it could be the phase where they’re in the bunker and preparing to set
off the whole system again, and they’re finding guns and a way to do it again.
Resurrection (Apotheosis)
Climax, the last and most dangerous meeting with death.
Wisplash: He walks away – after fletcher betrays him – humillated in front of the most powerful people in the music industry – but comes back! And destroys flatecher with his solo.
Jurassic Park: Alan finds his lovely partner, the kids and the others fight against the raptors and almost get killed- but the T-rex comes and eats the raptors up.
Return with the elixir
Feast or wedding.
Wisplash: You know he did good, gets the first sign of appreciation. Protagonist has become the hero.
Jurassic Park: The helicopters come and they leave the island happily.
