Hernias Flashcards

1
Q

What are the different treatment options for umbilical hernias?

A

Herniorrhaphy - GOLD STANDARD
Hernia clamp - slow ischemia; ideally no granulation tissue left; painful
Elastor bands
Irritant injection
Benign neglect
Hernia belt

Q

What kind/size of suture and bandages do you want to use for a herniorrhaphy?

A

PDS II, Maxon, Vicryl
Appositional
Figure 8 pattern

Use big suture - want fibrous tissue around repair
No skin sutures - do SQ because don’t want something that has to be removed

Nexaband (medical grade glue) - do not use on cut edges, but put under and roll over; skin bond bandage

Q

What is a Richter’s hernia?

A

AKA enterocutaneous fistula
Incarcerated/strangulated hernia involving only one sidewall of the bowel, which can spontaneously reduce resulting in gangrenous bowel and perforation within the abdomen without signs of obstruction

16
Q

What are some treatment options for inguinal/scrotal hernias?

A

Repeated manual reduction (usually in newborns and note in medical record for when they go to castrate later)

Inguinal herniorrhaphy

Support bandage (caution at castration)

17
Q

What are the steps of inguinal herniorrhaphy?

A

Reduction and transfixation of ligature
Closure of inguinal ring

Note: tilting operating table can ease repair

18
Q

What can happen to a foal with a “sloppy” vaginal ring?

A

Can dump guts out after future castration
