How do you position the patient?
A
If supine and swelling visible, leave supine
If not visible, ask patient to stand

What do you do on inspection?
A
Look carefully and compare both sides . Ask patient to cough.

How do you palpate?
A
Palpate lump
Note - size, extent, heat/tension/tenderness, feel for cough impulse, relation to pubic tubercle

What is reduction?
A
Try to reduce the hernia
Ask patient to lay down, ask them to attempt to reduce it. If unable to, attempt yourself

What do you auscultate for?
A
Listen over lump for bowel sounds
Bowel sounds = bowel
No bowel sounds = omentum

How do you complete the exam?
A
Examine other side, examine scrotum, perform abdo exam
