Q

The apples of Hesperides

A

The golden apples grew in the garden of Hesperides which Gaia presented as a wedding gift to Zeus and Hera. The apples were guarded by Hesperides who were nymphs. As Herclues was unaware of the location of the garden this was one of his largest tasks and took him from Northern Africa to Illyria where we fought Achelous. Then he came to Mount Caucasus where the Titan Prometheus was chained by Zeus for defying the gods. Each day an eagle would come and peck out his liver and each night his liver would regrow to start the process again. Hercules killed the eagle and as a thank you Prometheus told Hercules how to get the apples. Hercules went to Atlas who had been tasked with holding up the skies and Hercules offered to hold the skies if Atlas would go and get the apples. Atlas agreed and offered to deliver the apples so that he wouldn’t have to hold the skies anymore but Hercules accepted and asked him to take the skies back for a moment as he went to get some pillows to cushion his shoulders. Atlas agreed, Hercules picked up the apples and then ran off with them. Athena then took them back to the garden after Hercules showed King Eurystheus as they were property of Zeus.

Q

Cerberus

A

The retrieval of Cerberus from the underworld. Upon arriving there, Hercules was greeted by both Persephone and Hades who presented him with a challenge. If he could capture Cerberus without any weapons, he could take him back to King Eurystheus. Hercules accepted and used the stranglehold that had proved so successful against the Nemean Lion and Cretan bull. After Cerberus was shown to King Eurystheus, it was returned to Hades to guard the underworld.
