Cold in the Interior - Signs and symptoms
Spleen: nausea/vomiting, diarrhea (thin, watery, no strong smell)
Kidney: frequent, profuse clear urination; urinary retention
Liver: painful menses, hernia, pain and contraction of testicles
Lung: profuse, thin, clear phlegm that is foamy, bubbly, or stringy
Heart: warms the chest, treats yang collapse (Tuo Syndrome)
P: Slow, tight
T: pale or blue
Caution: Herbs in this category tend to be warm, acrid, and dry, and may cause internal heat accumulation and damage yin and blood.
Herbs that Warm the Interior - Overview
Taste: acrid
Temperature: warm to hot
Chanel: depends on what area it is warming (Kid, Sp/St, He, Lu, Liv)
Main action: Warm the Interior and expel cold. Used for both Excess and Xu Cold
Caution: these herbs are warm, acrid and drying. They may cause Heat signs. Use with caution with Yin/Blood Xu
Often combined with herbs that Tonify Yang

• Tonifies and warms Yang - Kid Yang Xu
• Sp Yang Xu - cold, pain, diarrhoea
• He Yang Xu - palpitations, SOB, chest pain, cold limbs
• for Yang Collapse - profuse sweating, failing pulse (Si Ni Tang)
• warms the channels, disperses Damp; for pain and bi syndrome due to Cold - pain in muscles & channels, menstrual pain

Dosage: 3-9 grams
• Warms middle-jiao yang - Sp & St Cold - pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
• warms the Lung, dissolves Phlegm - cough, wheezing, profuse watery phlegm
• Restores depleted Yang for Yang collapse
• warms the channels and dispels Damp - coldness and pain in lower back
• stops bleeding due to Cold and Xu (Toasted ginger - Pao Jiang)

1.5-4.5 grams (add last five minutes; or take 1-2 grams as powder)
- warms the interior
• warms Kidney yang with waning Ming Men - weakness, cold low back & knees, impotence, libido, polyuria
• warms middle-jiao yang - epigastric and abdominal pain, vomit, diarrhoea
• warms Heart yang (chest bi) - warms the channels;
• for pain and bi syndrome
• for irregular menses, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, post-partum pain - returns floating heat to source
• for Kidney and Heart not communicating - anxiety, restlessness, insomnia - encourages the production of qi and blood (used with qi and blood tonifying herbs)
Contraindicated in pregnancy

Dosage: 1.5-4.5 grams
Dispels Cold, dries Damp, activates Qi, relieves pain
- warms middle-jiao
• for rebellious St qi - nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain
• for diarrhoea due to Cold and Damp
• Spreads Liv Qi -acid reflux/vomiting due to LQ invading St - warms the Liv channel and stops pain
• for hernia, pain and contraction of testicles, painful menses - Directs Fire down
• for sores in the mouth and tongue, hypertension
• only used externally at Kid 1
“Wu Zhu Yu stop vomiting” sounds like, “Would you stop vomiting?”
Can be used to stop vomiting it heat-pattern by combining it with cold herbs like Huang Lian.

• esp. for Kidney yang infertility, impotence, and low libido - used externally to treat toothache
