A
- liver infection caused by Hep B virus
- HBV is a dsDNA virus transmitted by blood, sexual activity or vertically

A
- perinatal exposure
- high risk sexual behaviour
- IV drug use
- birth in endemic region
- family history
- history of incarceration

Hepatitis B pathophysiology
A
liver damage secondary to host immune response to viral antigens

Hepatitis B signs and symptoms
A
- incubation for 6-20 weeks
- may be asymptomatic
- acute - fever, jaundice, LFTs
- long-term - HCC, chronic hepatitis, fulminant liver failure, glomerulonephritis, polyarteritis nodosa, cryoglobulinaemia

Hepatitis B investigations
A
- FBC, U&Es, LFTs, coagulation, HBV bloods
- consider ultrasound, CT, biopsy
- ground-glass hepatocytes on histology

A
- pegylated interferon-alpha
- antivirals
- liver transplant
- immunisation!
