Describe portal hypertension and its effects of ascites and esophageal varices

A

Elevated pressure in your portal venous system. The portal vein is a major vein that leads to the liver.
The most common cause of portal hypertension is cirrhosis of the liver.

Major complications are ascites and varices

Describe ascites

A

Not completely understood
* Ascites is defined as the pathologic accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity.
* It is the most common complication of cirrhosis, which is the most common cause of ascites in the United States, accounting for approximately 85% of cases.
* Within 10 years after the diagnosis of compensated cirrhosis, about 50% of patients will have developed ascites
