Doctrinal Reform
1536 - Cromwell and Cranmer started introducing protestant ideas - Ten Articles of Faith, vague protestant beliefs as Henry was conservative still had catholic elements ‘eucharist’ (the mass)
1536 - 38 - Injunctions and the Bishops book published attacking the clergy encouraging protestant reform
1537 - Bible translated in English - very protestant
1539 - Six Articles was introduced - Duke of Norfolk was responsible for it passing they were largely Protestant
Dissolution of the monasteries
1533 - Henry wanted to increase crown lands so seized the monasteries
1535 - Cromwell ordered inspections and surveys that discovered that corruption and abuse came from smaller monasteries (false) - this gave Henry and excuse
1536 - first act of dissolution on smaller monasteries under £200
1539 - the second act of dissolution on larger monasteries over 500 closed down
1540 - The Court of Augmentations
Impacts of dissolution of monasteries
- Brought Henry great wealth, amounted to a 1/10 of the kingdoms wealth it did little long term economy
- Henry sold of monastic lands to raise money but eventually lost control of the land and potential tax
- success for protestants as it lessened the possibility of Catholics return
- Monks and Nuns lost their work and homes but 1/5 of ex Monks secured other payments
- The effect to communities wasn’t that great as they had other opportunities to take up
