A

when Archbishop of Canterbury died, thomas cranmer replaced him - he favoured the divorce.

act of restraint of appeals meant the king had final authority and could not appeal to the pope.

Cranmer arranged for the case to be heard and it was publicly announced that the papal was invalid all along, his marriage was illegal.
