Act of Supremacy

A

1) Act of the Supremacy 1534
- When Henry secretly married Anne, he was excommunicated from the Church
- The act made Tudors and their heirs supreme head of the church in England
- there was no pope authority, therefore Henry could freely divorce Catherine of Aragon

A
  • Treaty of London 1518
  • England was unable to compete with France and Spain
  • Wolsey in 1518 arranged each country to sign a peace treaty with England
  • Henry became part of European politics and and removed English isolation from them

A
  • Happened in 1522
  • Henry declared war with Charles and Duke of Bourbone against France
  • However, Charles and Bourbon troops ne’er showed up
  • Charles used English to distract French so he can defeat them in their one- to - one Battle of Pavia ( Italy )

  • he was thought a number of musical instruments
  • skilled sportsman
  • ## had been familiar with humanistic ideas, development in education, drama and music, new art and architecture

Dissolution of the monasteries

A
  • Happened in 1535
  • The Crown took the land that monasteries were stood on and the goods and riches inside them were sold
  • The monasteries were disbanded, Henry took their income and used many to fund wars and pay off the debts this was known as Dissolution of the monasteries
  • Despite brooking from Rome, Henry was never Protestant himself

A

Problems :

  • Curropted and wealthy Church ( indulgences = buying of the the place in purgantary by praying for the people sins )
  • Catherine gave daughter and not a son
  • Pope refused to give divorce
  • Henry was running out of money due to high cancellation of the wars in Europe

The fall of Wolsey

A
  • Henry ( forbade a second marriage in the same generation ), Wolsey ( Pope Chlamnet, man could marry his brothers wife if she childless )
  • Pope called the case October 1529 ( understandable that no divorce )
  • Henry thought that denial in marriage was became of Boleyn George fiction that Wolsey wants a Papal position
  • Wolsey was arrested of PARAMUNIE
  • 1530 died on the journey
  • One of the reasons why Pope refused due to Charles VI who became the new HRE and had take the control over the Rome and he was a Catherine nephew

  • Yorkshire October 1536 ( Lincolnshire )
  • North of the England was strongly catholic and due to dissolution the church were destroyed
  • “ Kings Great Matter “ - term discussed complications with divorce with Catherine
  • Rebellion could get support from other countries due to being highly catholic
  • Not localised in one area rather than vast majority of the North
  • 2nd December 1536 Duke of Norfolk met Robert Aske ( leader ) to discuss the terms of the peace treaty( The return of the papal authority was the main one )
  • In overall the rebels presented a list of 24 demands called “The Pontefract Articles “
