What were Henry’s foreign policy goals?
- Came to the throne with money from his father (1509)
- Confident with foreign policy
- Keen to establish himself as a powerful European country
- Wanted to show himself as a warrior who was good in battle.
- Demonstrate his power to the English people
What was the difference between Henry VII’s and Henry VIII’s foreign policy?
Henry VII has been insecure and had no money after The Wars of the Roses. Henry VIII took power in peacetime and had plenty of time.
What happened in 1512?
Henry led an unsuccessful army invasion in to France. It cost lots of money, demoralised troops, many died from illness and it was a failure.
What was Wolsey’s role?
He led a successful military campaign in France in 1513.
The English drove off the French in the BATTLE OF THE SPURS and captured the town of TOURNAI.
What happened after the capture of Tournei?
The treaty of Saint-German-en-Laye was completed by Cardinal Wolsey. England owned Tournei and Henry was paid yearly for agreeing not to claim to be the French king
What had happened by 1514?
Henry was perceived as a strong leader but he had not got any nearer to being French king which he thought he rightfully was.
What were the negatives of Henry VIII’s foreign policy?
Th French were upset by Henry imposing the yearly payment on them.
The English appeared to have limitations because they hadn’t succeeded in France.

They were allies with the French
They could possibly attack England if England decided to attack France.
James IV could distract armies from France by attacking in the north.

Henry was in France so Catherine of Aragon was in charge of the army.

What happened in 1513?
*The Scottish invaded northern England in 1513 using canon to attack and kill English resistance.
*Catherine ordered remaining English army north to get rid of the Scottish army.
*This resulted in THE BATTLE OF FLODDEN, ( last medieval battle on English soil).

James IV after Flodden
James IV died at the Battle of Flodden. His body was placed in a lead coffin and transported to London fao of Catherine of Aragon.
She was sent his blood stained coat which she then passed on to her husband in France to use a s a war banner.
Was Henry a successful monarch in his early reign?
Yes and no.
- He was still a long way from ruling France and agreed to stop calling himself the King of France in return for money.
- However, the Scottish king was dead and the army was severely damaged.
