How did medieval kings raise armies before Henry VII passed the statute of livery and maintenance ?

A

They had to ask their nobles for their armies to fight for the king when required kings allowed the nobles to have their own private army so that they could control their piece of land given to them by the king. If a noble refused to give the king his army the king ordered another noble to fight him.

A

It taught Henry that he couldn’t trust the nobles to provide an army to fight for him also some of the nobles supported the Lancastrians and some supported the Yorkists

Spain in charge of the Holy Roman Empire- competing for power with France.

Why does a monarch need money?

A
  • To raise money for an army to keep peace in England and prevent invasions from other countries.
  • To pay for palaces, jewels and other signs of wealth to give the impression that the country is well off.
  • If the country is wealthy there is less chance of rebellion in the country.

A

Dudley falsely accused him of murdering a child
He then fined him £500 which Sunnyff wouldn’t pay
He then put him in prison using a threatened jury
Sunnyff had to pay eventually as there was no prospect of being released

A

Trading in cloth- The Cloth Industry.

  • Made up 90% of England’s exports
  • Was considered the best cloth in Europe so had High tax on it

Which trade deals affected the sale of cloth?

A

1489: Treaty of Medina del Campo- reduced tariffs between Spain and England
1496: Intercursus Magnus- limited tariffs on cloth being sold to Flanders and the rest of Europe.
These aided the export of cloth.
