When H7 took power, how was England’s relationship with foreign powers? (2)
WEAK, because the HUNDRED YEARS WAR (with France), and the WARS OF THE ROSES had resulted in a breakdown of relationships and trade with Europe.
Did Henry VII care about England’s relationship with European countries? (2)
YES. He realised the importance of good foreign relations and healthy trade. It would improve his and his country’s WEALTH, and also improve the chances of PEACE.
Why was PEACE useful to Henry VII? (2)
He was poor, and his position was WEAK. Peace reduced the risk that he would be OVERTHROWN by a foreign power (which would have been the end of the Tudor Dynasty), and minimised the MONEY he would need to waste on expensive battles.
What were the 2 main powers in Europe that H7 had to manage relationships with? (2)
Spain and France.
Describe WHEN and HOW Henry VII first tried to improve England’s relationship with Spain? (2)
- in 1501 he married his eldest son, ARTHUR, to CATHERINE OF ARAGON, thus establishing peace with Spain.
What happened to Arthur? (1)
He died in 1502, only a year after marrying CofA.
What did Henry do after Arthur’s death? (2)
He arranged for his second son, HENRY, to marry Catherine of Aragon, which maintained PEACE with Spain.
Describe WHEN and HOW did Henry VII try to improve England’s relationship with SCOTLAND? (2)
- In 1499 Henry VII signed a TREATY OF PEACE with Scotland
2. In 1502 he married one pot his daughters, MARGARET, to JAMES IV of Scotland.
What affect did H7’s improved relationship with Scotland have on France? (2)
It reduced the French influence over Scotland, which reduced the risk that there would be rebellion from North of the Border.
Describe WHEN and HOW did Henry VII try to improve England’s relationship with FRANCE? (2)
- He agreed the TREATY OF ETAPLES in 1492 with Charles VIII of France
- He made arrangements for for his daughter, MARY, to marry LOUIS THE DAUPHIN (heir to the throne of France).
