  1. The TUDOR ROSE.
  2. It was a red and white rose, signifying the union of the houses of Lancaster (Red Rose) and York (white rose)
  3. By marrying Elizabeth of York, he hoped to unify a divided kingdom, and bring peace.
  4. In a time when few were literate, the use of this rose symbol was a good way to help brand the new monarchy.
