What key things did Henry do to consolidate his power as soon as he came to the throne?

A

Marry Elizabeth (1485), the birth of Arthur (1486), a grand parade and not using parliament to Crown himself. As well as dating his reign to before the battle so all opposition were legally traitors.

A

Secure power on the throne, establish the Tudor dynasty and quell Yorkist opposition.

A

1486 and was joined by Stafford. The uprising was easily stopped and Stafford was captured and executed.

Why was Simnel’s claim threatening?

A

Crowned King in Ireland in May 1487. Supported by Mary and given some mercenaries to land in England with. But overall not threatening as Henry knew of a planned rebellion.

What did Henry do to prepare for Simnel’s landing in England?

A

Re-instated Earl of Northumberland to control the North of England (risky as he was an advisor to Richard III). Strengthened coastal defences in East Anglia. However the rebels landed in the North but were unable to gain much support as no one knew who’s side was going to win.

Who did Warbeck garner support from?

A

Charles VIII (France) and Margaret of Burgundy and tried to land with these forces in 1495. Quickly defeated as Henry knew of the plans.

A

William Stanley, he was executed and his state was given to the King in 2/95.

A

In 1497 after a failed attempt to capitalise on the Cornish Rebellion. Tried for Treason and executed in 1499.

Who else did Henry execute in order to consolidate power?

A

The Earl of Warwick (had the strongest claim to the throne) and was accused of plotting with Warbeck. Executed with Warbeck in 1499.

Why and was Warbeck threatening?

A

Henry himself made Warbeck threatening due to his constant worry and overreaction. He constantly adapted his policies in order to capture Warbeck. Etaples (1492), Magnus Intercursus (1496). As well as this the search and building of defences cost lots of money.

When were the de la Pole brothers captured and executed?

A

Edmund captured with Treaty of Windsor (1506) and executed by Henry VIII in 1513. Richard died at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 (he was the infamous White Rose).
