‘every mark of capacity and kindness’ → generous, open, good person
How is Jekyll presented as secretive (chapter 3)

Suggests he has unpleasant motives (perhaps hyde has briefly come out trying to get jekyll to be quiet)
‘blackness about his eyes’ → obscurity / hidden. Trying to hide the truth
‘A trifle sharply’ → (response to utterson asking the will’ shows Jekyll is nervous and that this is a touchy subject
‘This is a private matter, and I beg of you to let it sleep’ → he is worried utterson will discover the truth
Worried about his addiction
Ideas of ‘private’ contrast Jekylls seemingly open and loving nature
How is Jekyll shown to be ‘sick’ in chapter 5
‘Held out a cold hand’ → ideas of a corpse, and the ‘good’ jekyll being dead
‘Bade him welcome in a changed voice’ → change voice suggests he is unwell + foreshadows that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person

Disconsolate suggests he is unhappy
‘smile struck out his face’
‘an expression of abject terror and dispair’
→ Hyde is taking over / inflicting pain on Jekyll
Jekyll is scared realising he can no longer control hyde
How does Jekyll talk about hyde being ‘released’ in chapter 10
‘my devil had been long caged, he came out roaring’
Biblical imagery used to demonise hyde
‘roaring’ shows animalistic qualities suggesting hyde is natural
Emphasises the aggression and primitive nature of hyde (ideas of the Id)
