  • barons were powerful and beat his dad at the Battle of Lewes (1264)
  • barons couldn’t afford to go on crusades with him (had to get loans from pope and French king)

Opportunities Edward could build on

A
  • defeating Simon de Montford at Evesham (1265)
  • rebels were allowed to pay for their land back (redemption)
  • experiences of battle (crusades)
  • had control of clergy and parliament (1/2 their income went to the crusade)
  • peace between England and Wales due to the Treaty of Montgomery (1267)
  • no one opposed him coming to power -> able to go to Gascony to settle affairs on way home from crusades
