- Henry III had 316 rebels to 133 loyal supporters
- barons were powerful and beat his dad at the Battle of Lewes (1264)
- barons couldn’t afford to go on crusades with him (had to get loans from pope and French king)

- defeating Simon de Montford at Evesham (1265)
- rebels were allowed to pay for their land back (redemption)
- experiences of battle (crusades)
- had control of clergy and parliament (1/2 their income went to the crusade)
- peace between England and Wales due to the Treaty of Montgomery (1267)
- no one opposed him coming to power -> able to go to Gascony to settle affairs on way home from crusades

- married in 1254: given land by dad and knighted by Spanish father in law
