Henry II receives papal permission to invade Ireland

Thomas Becket is appointed as Archbishop after the death of Theobald. Becket becomes radicalised over night. Becket especially concerned with criminous clerks .

Constitutions of Clarendon created as a way of solidifying Royal and ecclesiastic traditional powers but this did not hinder conflict.
1164-70
Becket goes into exile in France. Henry’s son crowned as successor by Archbishop of York which gains disapproval from both Becket and the Pope.
1170
Conducts economic survey ‘inquest into Sheriffs’ which some nobility considered an unprecedented breach of aristocratic privacy.
29th December, Becket is murdered by Henry’s knights.
1173-4
Henry’s family revolt against him. Contemporaries criticise Henry for failing to satisfy the ambitions of his sons, but only few opportunistic nobles join plight.
