Henry 8th's Rise Flashcards
1
Q
How was Henry different to his father?
A
- Disbanded the Council Learned in Law and ordered the arrest of Empson and Dudley (his father’s chief financial reinforcers)
- Cancelled 175 bonds and recognisances that were still owing - Henry 7th was much harder on nobility
- Had a much more lavish royal court where he enjoyed jousting, playing tennis and listening to music
- While Henry 7th maintained close personal control of affairs, Henry 8th preferred to appoint ministers to handle these e.g. Wolsey then later Cromwell
- By giving ministers power, Henry created something that his father had tried to avoid - factionalism at court

Q
How was Henry similar to his father?
A
- Was keen to secure the dynasty and make strong political relationships - agreed to marry Catherine of Aragon - deliberately delayed the wedding until he was sure it would bring diplomatic advantage to England
- Was also suspicious of possible rivals from the nobility - executed Edmund de la Pole in 1513 - the main Yorkist claimant
- Continued to use JPs to enforce law in local communities rather than rely on nobility
