Hemolysis Flashcards
1
Q
Define: hemolysis
A
Hemolysis: release of hemoglobin into the fluid portion of the blood as the result of breaking apart the cell walls of red blood cells
2
Q
List 2 ways hemolysis may occur. (2)
A
- Mechanical means
2. Result of a disease or physical disorder (autohemolysis)
3
Q
Which of the 2 reasons for hemolysis is most likely? (1)
A
Mechanical means - incorrect blood drawing or specimen processing techniques
4
Q
Why should one avoid causing hemolysis?
A
May adversely affect many laboratory results
5
Q
List 6 ways to avoid mechanical hemolysis. (6)
A
- When drawing with a syringe, do not draw back on the plunger forcefully
- Use the appropriately-sized needle for the vein
- If a syringe is used and blood is injected into an evacuated tube, use a 21 gauge needle and NEVER force the blood into the tube by pushing the plunger (allow the vacuum to draw the blood from the syringe)
- When mixing blood with additives in the tubes, invert the tubes about 5 times
- Use tubes that are at room temperature
- Allow the antiseptic to dry before inserting the needle
