Hemoglobin derivatives Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cause of methemoglobin?
A
Iron is oxidized to the ferric state. Usually acquired from exposure to oxidants.
2
Q
What is the effect of having methemoglobin?
A
Methemoglobin cannot bind O2, causes cyanosis and possibly death
3
Q
What characteristic can be seen with methemoglobin?
A
heinz bodies
4
Q
What is the cause of sulfhemoglobin?
A
Sulfur bound to heme. Acquired from exposure to drugs and chemicals.
5
Q
What is the effect of having sulfhemoglobin?
A
O2 affinity is 1/100th normal, cyanosis
6
Q
What is the cause of carboxyhemoglobin?
A
carbon monoxide binds to heme. Heme has a 200x greater affinity for CO than O2, skin turns cherry red.
7
Q
What is the effect of carboxyhemoglobin?
A
lower O2 to tissues, can be fatal.
