Hemispheric lateralistion Flashcards
what is hemispheric lateralisation?
refers to some functions might only be found in one hemisphere rather than both
how are the two hemispheres of the brain connected?
via a bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum
what does split brain research refer to?
patients who have their corpus callosum severed so the two hemispheres cannot be communicate
outline the study by Sperry on split-brain research
a split brained patients eyes were focused on a point directly ahead of them and they were asked to report anything that they see. words that were flashed up in the RVF were immediately reported however nothing was reported when something was put in the LVF. This is because something projected in the LVF is received by the right hemisphere meaning the patient has to use their right hemishere language centre which is very limited
What are the explanations for Sperry’s findings?
Something projected in the LVF is received by the right hemisphere meaning the patient has to use their right hemisphere language centre which is very limited therefore the patient cannot report seeing something
