Functional recovery Flashcards

1
Q

what is functional recovery?

A

the recovery of abilities and mental process that heave been compromised or lost as a result of brain injury or disease. this is acheived as a result of brain plasticity i.e. neural reorganisation and neural regeneration

Q

what is neural reorganisation?

A

known as rewiring, it is the treansfer of functions to undamaged areas to allow functional recovery

Q

How does neural reorganisation occur?

A

can occur as a result of neuronal unmasking, axonal sprouting and recruitment of homologous series

Q

What is axonal sprouting?

A

the axons of surviving neurons grow new branches that make synapses in areas of the brain formerly supplied by the damaged neurons

Q

what is recruitment of homologous series?

A

brain behaviour becomes active in the equivalent part of the brain on the opposite side of the hemisphere which enables neural reorganization and functional recovery

Q

what is neuronal unmasking

A

synaptic connections exist anatomically, but their function is blocked. under normal circumstances
