Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
1
Q
What is meant by hemispheric lateralisation? (1)
A
*Hemispheric lateralisation in the brain refers to how the brain is split into two halves called the left and right hemisphere, both responsible for different functions and roles.
2
Q
What is the left hemisphere responsible for? (2)
A
- *responsible for language and logic
- the two main lang centres are located in LH
- brocas area which is responsible for production of language
- and wernickes area, responsible for understanding language
3
Q
What is the right hemisphere responsible for? (2)
A
- *responsible for creativity and recognition of faces, places and objects
- can only produce basic words and phrases
- but contributes to emotional context of whats being said
4
Q
What is meant by contralateral wiring?
A
- *hem lat also states brain has contralateral wiring
- *LH receives info from RVF so controls right side of body
- *RH receives info from LVF so controls left side of body
- many functions are not lateralised; such as vision, motor and somatosensory cortex as they occur in both hemispheres
5
Q
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate hemispheric lateralisation?
A
RTS by Sperry - split brain patients
RTC by patient EB - damaged LH
Discussion - low pop val
