What are the functions of the endocrine system?
A
- provides a chemical system of communication within bloodstream to regulate activity of cells and organs in body
- chemical messengers are hormones, which are released by glands within endocrine system to regulate many bodily functions
- slower than nervous system but effects are more widespread and powerful

Describe the role of glands in the endocrine system
A
- gland is an organ that releases hormones that control functions in the body
- there are many diff glands in the body
- such as the pituitary gland, pineal gland, adrenal gland, ovaries and testes (only need to know 2 for exam)

Describe the function of the pituitary gland
A
- known as the master gland
- releases many diff hormones that control the function of the other glands

Describe the function of the pineal gland
A
- releases hormone melatonin
- which is involved in regulating sleep - wake cycle by making person feel tired + ready to sleep

Describe the function of the adrenal gland
A
- releases adrenaline
- involved in fight or flight response causing physiological changes
- such as inc blood flow to transport oxygen to brain quicker for rapid response planning
