Hemiazygos Veins and Accessory HemiAzygos Veins Flashcards
The Hemiazygos vein lies on
The Left side and corresponds to the lower part of azygos vein
How is hemiazygos vein formed
- Union of left ascending lumbar vein and left subcostal vein
- It may arise from posterior surface of left renal vein
The Course of Hemiazygos Vein
It pierces left crus of diaphragm and ascends vertically upwards to the level of T8 from where it turns right and crosses in front of vertebral column and posterior to aorta and thoracic duct to join the azygos vein
The tributaries of hemiazygos vein are
- Lower three (9th–11th) left posterior intercostal veins.
- Left subcostal vein.
- Left ascending lumbar vein.
- Small esophageal and mediastinal veins.
The Accessory Hemiazygos vein line on
The left side and corresponds to the upper part of azygos vein
Course of Accessory HemiAzygos Vein
It begins at the medial end of 4th or 5th intercostal space from where it descends to the left side of vertebral column and at T8 Level it turns right in front of vertebral column and posterior to aorta and thoracic duct to merge with Azygos Vein
The tributaries of Accessory hemiazygos vein are
- Fifth to eighth (5th–8th) left posterior intercostal veins.
- Left bronchial veins (sometimes).
