When is hematuria significant?
A
> 25 RBC/HPF = worrisome
Both gross and microscopic hematuria are significant
Note: 85% bladder cancer cases present with hematuria

A
- Malignant neoplasms (renal & bladder)
- Infection
- Renal calculi
- Coagulopathy
- Glomerular disease
- Hydronephrosis
- Trauma
- Polycystic kidneys
- Medication
- BPH
- Exercise-induced (resolves in 72 hours)

List risk factors for hematuria-related malignancy.
A
- Chronic UTI’s
- History of pelvic irradiation
- Age > 40 years***
- Smoking history
- Excessive acetaminophen/NSAIDs
- Men > women
- Occupational exposure

A

Consider referral to urology if:
- Age > 40 years
