Sickle Cell Anemia
DEF: Abnormal hemoglobin shape
EPI: 10-30YO; Black, mediterranean, middle eastern people
SYMP: Bone, chest, abdominal pain, stroke, ocular, priapism
RAD:MSK changes from; marrow hyperplasia, vascular occlusions, infection (salmonella)
ASS’D:renal medullary carcinoma, salmonella, Hyperurecemia (gout)
DDX: Thalassemia, AVN, OM
TX: Oxygen, water, bone marrow transplantation
Sickle cell Anemia Radiographic Details
Marrow - Red marrow in all bones, widened medullary cavity, diploid space
Vascular occlusions - Sickle cell dactylitis (Hand-Foot syndrome, patchy radiolucency and periostitis), Infarction (patchy sclerosis/lucency, snow-capping), growth disturbances (H-shaped vertebra, Cone shaped physis, tibiotalar slant)
Bone scan - positive within 1-2 weeks of crisis
