Hematology and Immunology Flashcards
ABO blood group
The classification of human blood based on the inherited red blood cells
Antibody
A protein component of the immune system that circulates in the blood, recognizes foreign substances like bacteria and viruses, and neutralizes them.
Antigen
Any substance that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against it.
Blood
The fluid that contains cells
Clotting factors
Proteins in your blood
Coagulation
The process of forming blood clots
Electrolytes
Minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge.
Erythrocyte
The functional component of blood responsible for the transportation of gases and nutrients throughout the human body
Eryth/o
Red blood cell
Hemoglobin
The protein contained in red blood cells that is responsible for delivery of oxygen to the tissues.
Hem/o
Blood
Hemostasis
The mechanism that leads to cessation of bleeding from a blood vessel.
Immune response
The body’s ability to stay safe by affording protection against harmful agents
Leukocyte
White blood cells
Leuk/o
White
Lymph
Fluid that circulates throughout the body in the lymphatic system
Lymphatic system
Part of the immune system
Lymph vessels
Tube-like structures that carry fluid (called lymph) away from the tissues to deliver it back into the blood’s circulation.
Lymph nodes
Small lumps of tissue that contain white blood cells, which fight infection.
Pathogen
An organism causing disease to its host
Plasma
The liquid part of the blood and lymphatic fluid, which makes up about half of the volume of blood.
Rh blood group
The positive or negative sign next to the blood groups
Serum
The clear liquid that can be separated from clotted blood.
Spleen
A small organ inside your left rib cage, just above the stomach.
