Q

What is the difference in signficance between the serum folate level and RBC folate level?

A

Serum folate level is an indication of recent folate intake, while RBC folate is the best indicator of long-term folate stores (higher sensitivity)

Q

What is the best way to treat anemia of chronic disease?

A

The primary Rx of anemia of chronic disease is through controlling the underlying dx process. If this is ineffective or impossible, Rx with erythropoietin injections for target hemoglobin of 12g/dL is appropriate

Q

What tests are used to categorize anemia

A

MCV (mean corpuscular hemoglobin), which is used to determine if the anemia is microcytic, macrocytic or normocytic

MCHC () may tell you if there is a problem with the synthesis of hemoglobin. The anemia could then be categorized as hypochromic, hyperchromic or normochromic
