Heparin.
Binds to platelets and makes them uncountable but also over activates them to make clots
What do you do when you suspect HIT in a patient?
Immediately D/C heparin, start direct-thrombin-inhibitor, ultrasound lower extremities
If you see the following pentad of symptoms:
- Thrombocytopenia
- Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia
- Kidney Disease
- Neurologic System abnormalities
TTP or HUS
Also, could see fever with TTP. and diarrhea in children
Schistocytes seen on RBC smear, could indicate:
Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
RBCs are being destroyed by clogged mircovasculature and broken into smaller pieces.
What type of thrombocytopenia is caused by both increased platelet destruction and decreased platelet formation?
ITP
What are important disorders to check for before settling on ITP?
Lupus, Medications, Lymphoma, HepC, HIV
Which thrombocytopenia is considered a “diagnosis of exclusion”?
ITP
What are the three causes of decreased platelet production?
Leukemia, Immune system disorder, ITP
What are the 5 causes of increased platelet destruction?
ITP, TTP HUS, HIT, DIC
DIC is a secondary cause of what?
Sepsis, Cancer, Trauma, Pregnancy
