Hematologic Disorders in Pregnancy Flashcards
Decrease in oxygen carrying capacity of the blood due to decrease hemoglobin in the blood
Anemia
Risk factors of Anemia
- Decrease nutritional intake
- Heredity
- Increased demands as in pregnancy and adolescence
- Poor absorption
Most common anemia of pregnancy
Iron-Deficiency Anemia
Many enter pregnancy with a deficiency of iron stores resulting from
- A combination of diet low in iron
- Heavy menstrual period
- Unwise weight-reducing programs
It is made available to the body by absorption from the duodenum into the bloodstream after it has been ingested
Iron
Exceptionally small RBC
Microcytic
Less hemoglobin than the average red blood cell
Hypochromic
Low hemoglobin levels might lead to:
- Extreme fatigue and poor exercise tolerance
- Low birth weight
- Preterm birth
- Pica
Assessment findings for Anemia
- Pale skin and mucous findings
- Pearl white sclera
- Brittle flattened nails
- Low serum iron level (under 30ug/dl)
- Increased iron-binding capacity (over 400ug/dl)
Necessary for the normal formation of red blood cells as well as preventing neural tube and abdominal wall defects in the fetus
Folic Acid/Folate/Folacin
Occurs most often in multiple pregnancies because of the increased fetal demand
Folic acid-Deficiency
Recessively inherited hemolytic anemia caused by an abnormal amino acid replaces the amino acid valine
Sickle-cell Anemia
Normal hemoglobin level
6-8mg/100ml
