Hemato/blood Physio Pt 1/2 (Hematopoiesis and blood cells) Flashcards
Name the components of blood.
(Think: blood tube pic w 3 layers)
Explain the hematopoietic devt in fetus and adult.
Liver > but+ spleen, in in charge of fetal hematopoietic devt (Extramedullary sites)
Bone marrow in charge of post-fetal =^ (Medullary sites)
Describe the hematopoietic lineage from a hematopoietic stem cell.
Hint: HSC –> M L –>
(i) GEMMM
(ii) TB,NK
Explain the process of erythropoiesis. + to form what?
Explain the process of thrombopoiesis. + to form what?
Explain what these hematopoietic investigations: RBC indices mean.
MCV:
MCH:
MCHC:
Haematocrit:
PBF:
Retic count:
MCV: mean corpuscle vol (= vol of rbc (and thus its size)) (Microcytic/ Normocytic/ Macrocytic)
MCH: mean corpuscle Hb (= vol of Hb in rbc) (Hypochromic/ Normochromic/ Hyperchromic)
MCHC: mean corpuscle Hc conc (= conc of Hb in a rbc)
Haematocrit = % vol of rbcs in blood
PBF: peripheral blood film (look at Size, Shape, Colour!)
Retic count: (tells you how much erythropoiesis and rate its happening)
Explain what these hematopoietic investigations: Platelet indices mean.
PT:
aPTT/ PTT:
Bleeding time:
Thrombin time:
Coag factor assays
Platelet aggregation assays
vWF Ag assays
Liver fxn test:
Serum D-dimers:
WBC count/ rbc count (in context of bleeding disorder):
Tourniquet test:
PT: extrinsic pathway time
aPTT/ PTT: intrinsic pathway time
Bleeding time: platelet plug formation time (hemostasis I)
Thrombin time: assess functionality of fibrinogen (aft addition of thrombin)
Coag factor assays (hemostasis II)
Platelet aggregation assays (hemostasis I)
vWF Ag assays (hemostasis I) (but note: vWF also stabilises clotting factor 8
Liver fxn test: cuz majority clotting factors pdced by liver - if liver not working properly, factors not pdced properly too (except TF and Ca2+)
Serum D-dimers: indicates thrombotic event
WBC count/ rbc count: pancytopenia]
Tourniquet test: test for fragility of blood capillaries
etc
Which tests are used to monitor:
(i) Heparin therapy
(ii) Warfarin therapy?
