Altruistic
When someone is motivated by the need to help others
Arousal: cost-reward model
Idea that people try to find the most const-effective way to help in an emergency to reduce their own distress
Audience inhibition
When the presence of other bystanders prevents someone from helping, out of fear of being judged by the others
Bystander effect
When the prescence of bystanders reduces the likelyhood of someone being helped in an emergency. The more bystanders, the less the likelyhood (Darley & Latané)
Diffusion of responsibility
When people assume others will and can take resposibility for intervening during an emergency
Egoistic
When someone is motivated by the need to help themselves/increase their own wellfare
Empathy-altruism hypothesis
The idea that when people experience other-oriented feelings of empathy, they will help out of altruistic motivation (Batson)
Empathy
Understanding or vicariously expereincing another individuals emotions and feeling sympathetic and compassionate for them
Kin selection
The idea that people are most likely to help those with the same genetic makeup as them, to increase the chance of genetic survival over time
Negatice state relief model
People who feel bad are likely to help others to elevate their mood
Pluralistic ignorance
Belief people have that every bystander is feeling and thinking differently from them, when in reality every bystander is thinking and feeling the same.
Prosicial behavior
Behavior intended to benefit others
Social norm
General rules of how to behave that are established by society
