Taenia solium
cestode/tapeworm–pork; intestine is primary site of infection (diarrhea); most infections are asymptomatic; ingested larvae in undercooked pork
Schistosoma species
trematodes/flukes–different forms of disease; can infect GI tract (GI bleeding, diarrhea, liver damage) or veins of urinary bladder (fibrosis, granulomas, hematuria)–egyptian river blindness
Ascaris lumbricoides
nematodes/roundworms–“roundworm disease” second only to pinworms as most prevalent multicellular parasite in US (1/3 of worlds population is infected); ingestion of soil containing eggs; larvae grow in intestine and cause abdominal symptoms including intestinal obstruction
Enterobus vermicularis
nematodes/roundworms–“pinworm disease” most common helminthic infection in US; pruritis ani occurs with white worms visible in stools
Trichinella spiralis
nematode/roundworm–“trichinosis” encysts tissues of human and pork hosts
