hello Flashcards
Vertebrates
Vertebrates comprise all animal taxa within the subphylum Vertebrata, including all mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are a paraphyletic group of animals that neither possess nor develop a vertebral column, derived from the notochord.
Consumer
any organism that can’t make its own food
Ganglion
In vertebrates the ganglion is a cluster of neural bodies outside the central nervous system
Gut
another term for the gastrointestinal tract
Coelom
the fluid-filled body cavity present between the alimentary canal and the body wall.
Bilateral Symmetry
When the body plan of an animal can be divided along a line that separates the animal’s body into right and left halves that are nearly identical of each other
Radial Symmetry
A form of symmetry in which identical parts are arranged in a circular fashion around a central axis
Asymmetry
Lack or absence of balanced proportions between parts of a thing
Sponges
Any of numerous aquatic, chiefly marine invertebrate animals of the phylum Porifera
Cnidarians
soft-bodied stinging animals such as corals, sea anemones, and jellyfish
Flatworms
a group of soft-bodied, usually much flattened invertebrates
Roundworms
parasitic worms that comprise the phylum nematoda.
Mollusks
any soft-bodied invertebrate of the phylum Mollusca, usually wholly or partly enclosed in a calcium carbonate shell secreted by a soft mantle covering the body.
Open circulatory system
the blood is not enclosed in the blood vessels, but is pumped into a cavity called a hemocoel
