What treaties did the CMC lead to
Test Ban Treaty - nuclear test could only be done underground - Jul 1963
Outer Space Treaty - prohibited tests in space - Jan 1967
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - 1968 - prevented nations from getting info and technology to build nuclear weapons
1963 Kennedy gave a speech about working with S.U to focus on their “common interests”
Despite Kennedy’s speech what were the S.U determined to do
Catch up with USA in the arms race and achieved this by 1965
Meant MAD and should be avoided at all costs
What agreements were made in SALT 1
No further production of strategic ballistic weapons
No increase in number of intercontinental ballistic weapons
No new nuclear missile launchers
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty limited both sides to two ABM deployment areas
How effective was SALT 1
Slowed down the arms race by placing limits on the number of bombers, ICBMs and SLBMS each side could have
led to further negotiations that culminated in SALT 2
Ensured that neither said had a decisive advantage in strategic nuclear weapons
However did not cover intermediate nuclear weapons which both sides continued to deploy in Europe during the late 1970s
When and were the Helenski Agreements signed
1975 in Helenski Finland
What was the purpose of SALT 1
Put a cap on the amount of weapon USA/SU could have
What was agreed at Helsinki by what countries
Agreed on security issues, cooperation, human rights and borders
By Canada and all European states except Albania and Andorra
Explain the importance of Helsinki
Helped the USA and SU form a stable relationship
Represented the high point of détente
Coincided with more US-Soviet cooperation like the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975 - a joint space mission and trade agreements
What was agreed in SALT 2
Significant delays over the technicalities of comparing the different types of weapon each side possessed
Each superpower limited to 2250 warheads
Imposed limits on new launch systems including multi-warheads missiles
Why did some West German politicians oppose the treaty
Feared it weakened the defence of West Germany
Thinking that USA would be less likely to use its nuclear weapons if West Germany was attacked by the Soviet Union
Relations decreased after the S.U invaded Afghanistan in 1979 - meant US Senate never approved the treaty - never became official US policy
