It is the activity of making or mending clothes or other things using a needle and a thread.
Sewing
They come in sizes 1 - 12. They vary in point. Length and size of the eyes.
Needles
With a rounded eye and can be used for all fabrics.
Sharps
With rounded eye and shorter than sharps, used for heavier fabrics. They are also called quilting needles.
Betweens
With rounded eyes and are used for knits
Ball points
The thread is pulled through a slot and not through the eye
Calyx eyes
Longer than sharps and used for basting.
Milliners
They come in different colors depending on the fabric for which they will be used. ______ also come in different sizes.
Threads
Used for threading needles easier.
Needles Threader
They are also called seamstress pins. They are used to hold garments temporarily.
Straight pins
Used to protect the middle finger from being pricked when pushing the needle through the cloth.
Thimbles
Holds the pins and needles when not in use. Emery bag is used to polish pins and rusty needles.
Pin cushion / Emery bag
It has zigzag edges so as to prevent the fabric from raveling.
Pinking shears
Used for cutting small jobs.
Light trimmers
These are the best shears for cutting.
Bent-handled dressmaker’s shears
Used to take body measurements.
Tape measures
Used to mark lines on fabrics and patterns.
Ruler
Used for detailed measurements such as distance between button holes, pleats and hems
Dressmaker’s gauge
Used for slashing button holes and picking out threads.
Seam Ripper
Is made by taking the thread backward than the conventional forward motion.
Back Stitch
An embroidery stitch forming a continuous line of long, overlapped stitches, typically used to represent narrow stems.
Stem Stitch
This is the simplest type of hand stitching. This is used in mending different kinds of tears. The stitches are in equal length and uniform in distance from each other.
Running Stitch
A very old stitch used for outline and fling in colors for patterns.
Split Stitch
Is a sewing and embroidery technique in which a series of looped stitches form a chain like pattern.
Chain Stitch
Bring the needle to the right side of the center flower
Lazy Daisy Stitch
Shake running stitches around the design.
Satin Stitch
This is used on small circular parts or holes of the design.
Eyelit Stitch
Fasten the thread on place the needle close to the spot where the thread comes out, hold the thread firmly by the thumb of the left hand and then twist twice around the needle and turn from left to right.
French Knots
It is a hard, square wax used to mark the fabric.
Tailor’s chalk
Used in making patterns.
Soft Pencil
It is placed between the pattern paper and the fabric.
Dressmaker’s carbon or tracing paper
Is used with the dressmaker’s carbon to transfer the marks to the fabric.
Tracing wheel
Sharp pointed steel at one end is called the needle’s eye
Needle
Ball threads and skin threads are soft, shiny and loosely wound and are good for embroidery.
Thread
Small pointed, and sharp.
Scissors
A support frame made of two rounded pieces of rattan or yantok
Bastidor
A pointed metal, bamboo or wood which is used to bore a hole into the cloth and produces an eyelet design once it is embroidered
Stiletto
These are clothes which are good for embroidery.
