Q

What do the higher bar markings on the top of the mechanical beam scale represent(Weight) ?

A

The long bold lines represent 1 lb. each. The shorter lines (in between) represent fractional numbers starting with

  • 1/4 or .25
  • 1/2 or .5 and
  • 3/4 or .75

Q

How do measure the weight of a patient using the mechanical beam scale?

A
  1. Make sure your scale is calibrated by setting the large and small weights at the zero marking.
  2. Ask the patient to step on the scale to take their weight.
  3. Re-calibrate your scale to find the weight of the patient.
  4. Add the number of lbs. from the bottom and top weights.
  5. Record your findings so that you do not forget them.

Q

How do you read the markers/measurements on a lower rod (also known as the outer rod) ?

A

The longest lines marked with the bigger sized numbers represent the ft. The normal sized lines with the normal sized numbers represent the in. (1 in. per normal line). Then the smaller lines in between the normal sized lines which do not have numbers represent fractional numbers as follows:

  • 1/4 or .25
  • 1/2 or .5
  • 3/4 or .75

The measurements on a lower rod increase as they go from the bottom to the top.

Q

How do you read the markings/measurements on an upper rod (also known as the inner rod)?

A

The upper rod is very similar to the lower rod, the only difference is that the upper rod increases as it goes from top to bottom.
