Blood Pressure Flashcards
What is the systolic blood pressure reading ?
It is the measurement of blood pressure as the heart is beating
What is the diastolic blood pressure reading ?
It is the blood pressure reading as the heart is resting.
How is the blood pressure reading order
Systolic over diastolic (Systolic/diastolic)
What does each line of the blood pressure gauge represent ?
It represents 2 mmHg. (millimetres of Mercury)
What is a normal blood pressure reading?
120/80 (120 Systolic/ 80 Diastolic)
What is the meaning of blood pressure?
It is the blood’s force as it is pumping against the walls of the arteries.
Hypertension/ Hypertensive
Having high blood pressure = 140/90
Hypotension/ Hypotensive
Having low blood pressure = 90/60 (90 Systolic/ 60 Diastolic)
What is the ideal way to measure blood pressure ?
- Wash hands
- Ask patient permission
- Make sure patient has arm at heart level (aligning with their heart)
- Palpate for the brachial artery (located at the bend of arm = antecubital area)
- Apply blood pressure cuff over the brachial artery of the patient, usually 1 or 2 in. over the antecubital space (this cuff may vary in size according to the patient)
- Lightly apply the bell of the stethoscope over the brachial artery.
- Pump up the sphygmomanometer up to about 180 mmHg
- Slowly let the bp cuff go.
- Hear for the first karakoff sound (systolic)
- Hear for the last karakoff sound (diastolic)
