Severe and sudden onset. coughing, change of head position causes increased pain.
Associated with HTN.
Recent head trauma.
Headache
Meningitis
Brain Aneurism
Subdural Hematoma
What are their symptoms? Migraine Meningitis Brain Aneurism Concussion Subdural Hematoma
Migraine–aura (light flashing in periphery or smell), photophobia (light is very bothersome)
Meningitis–severe and sudden onset
Brain Aneurism–associated with HTN,
Concussion–Nausea, vomiting.
Subdural Hematoma–Recent heat trauma, coughing, change of head position causes increased pain.
What are the questions to ask if a person has a headache? 3
Any associated questions? (aura, nausea vomiting, photophobia, coughing, change of head makes pain worse)
Any new meds?
Family Hx?
The Eyes
What are common concerning symptoms of the eyes? 9
Visual
1.Close v far vision…cannot read upclose…changes are within a couple of weeks.
2.Blurred vision
3. Visual field loss (looking straight at you, but cannot see part of you)
4. Floaters and flashes (generally harmless, but could mean retina is breaking away or signal macular degeneration)
5. Diplopia (double vision, brain or eye injury–muscles aren’t coordinated)
Other symptoms
6. Pain
7. Redness
8. Tearing (irritant, hole in eyelid to drain tears is blocked)
9. Exudate (gunk in the eye)
What is a symptom of hearing changes? What can cause it?
Hearing loss
New meds can cause hearing loss.
What are 2 types of ear pain?
Otitis externa–inflammation of the outer ear and ear canal.
Otitis media–Inflammation of the middle ear…just inside the ear drum.
Ear discharge
What are correlations of Tinnitus?
Age related
Med related
Associated w/ hearing loss and vertigo…Meniere’s disease.
What is Rhonorrhea?
What are two possible causes?
Rhinorrhea–nose discharge.
Allergic rhinorrhea–allergies.
URI–Upper respiratory infection.
What is Epistaxis?
What are four causes of it?
Epistaxis–Nose bleed
Inflammation and drying of mucosa
Foreign bodies
Bleeding disorder
Nose picking
Sore throat…
How would you be able to tell if it was strept throat?
What if it is just a sore throat?
If the sore throat is associated w/ fever and swollen lymph nodes suspect strept.
If no fever or swollen lymph, consider allergy or viral infection.
What is it called if the back of the throat is bright red?
Inflamed pharynx
What is gingivitis?
Bleeding of the gums.
What is inflamed if someone has hoarseness?
Larynx is inflamed.
